In the Ring

Dog shows (conformation events) are intended to evaluate breeding stock. The size of these events ranges from large all-breed shows, with over 3,000 dogs entered, to small local specialty club shows, featuring a specific breed. The dog's conformation (overall appearance and structure), an indication of the dog's ability to produce quality puppies, is judged.

AKC All Breed Best In Show

A Beginner's Guide To Dog Shows, published by the American Kennel Club says that “dog shows (conformation events) are intended to evaluate breeding stock.” These shows range in size from 400 to over 3,000 entries. The AKC believes that “The dog's conformation (overall appearance and structure), an indication of the dog's ability to produce quality puppies, is judged.”

“The judges examine the dogs, then give awards according to how closely each dog compares to the judge's mental image of the “perfect” dog described in the breed's official standard.” The breed standard was written by the Kuvasz Club of America, the parent club for Kuvasz with the AKC. “The standard describes the characteristics that allow the breed to perform the function for which it was bred. These standards include specifications for structure, temperament and movement.

“All-breed shows offer competition for over 150 breeds and varieties of dogs recognized by the AKC.” Dogs are judged first at the breed level against other dogs of the same breed. The winner of this competition is awarded Best Of Breed and only the Best of Breed winner goes on to the group level. At the group level dogs compete with other dogs from one of the seven groups. The Kuvasz is in the working group which are dogs that were bred to “pull carts, guard property, and perform search and rescue services.

“Four placements are awarded in each group, but only the first-place winner advances to the Best in Show competition.” The dog who wins the Best in Show competition is considered to be the exhibit that most closely resembles his breed standard.

We are proud to present Szumeria's AKC All Breed Best in Show winners.

The first KCA National Specialty was held in Reno, Nevada in 1993. To date, there have been 17 KCA National Specialties. Breeders and owners alike bring their best dogs to compete for the coveted title of “Best In Specialty Show” winner. Szumeria has bred and/or owned dogs that have won Best of Breed at 11 of these KCA Nationals, an achievement unmatched by any other Kuvasz Kennel to date.

Why is this important to you? You want a beautiful, structurally sound and healthy family companion. The AKC provides a mechanism where independent judges, who have passed rigorous criteria established by the AKC, can evaluate the breeding stock of individual Kennels.

AKC Rules Applying to Dog shows states “Competition in conformation and performance events can best demonstrate the progress that has been made in breeding for type and quality, and/or for practical use, stamina and obedience.” Conformation dog shows “are intended to evaluate breeding stock” according to the AKC Beginner's Guide to Dog Shows.
